What Does it Mean to be a Good Person?

What does it mean to be a good person?

This question is famously difficult to answer.

Especially given how many different definitions of “good” are out there.

Even within the Church, varying degrees of opinion persist on the matter.

So, how can our faith help with this?

A Little Bit of Good and a Little Bit of Bad

For starters, it’s worth noting that humans are complex beings.

We’d like to view the world and its people like a movie - with clear bad guys and good guys. Unfortunately, reality is scarcely that cut and dry.

If only it was as easy as looking at the color of one’s lightsaber. :(

Yes, some people seem to be so effortlessly good and others who are unequivocally nasty - but most of us exist somewhere in the middle.

Some days, I’m shining bright, smiling, and ready to help anyone who needs it.

On other days, I’m just in a bad mood, scowling my way through the day, and avoiding contact with as many people as possible.

We’re flawed, limited beings who make mistakes but does that mean it’s impossible to improve?

Absolutely not.

Goodness is the Way of Jesus

Jesus is the ideal human.

As far as goodness goes, I think it’s fair to say He excelled in the matter.

So when it comes to understanding what makes a person good, it’s best to start with Him.

And not just with what He taught but also with how He lived and with the grand narrative of His story, the Bible.

That’s exactly what we’re going to explore on Theophilus this week… What does it mean to be good? And what does our faith say about that?

Sheila and Horace gotta pick up the pace tbh.

Who knows, if you faithfully stick with the series until the end there might be a gold star in it for you.

Until tomorrow. ;)

For now, be blessed.
