The fear of the Lord

In Proverbs 9:10 it says the famous words: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of Wisdom.

So what does it mean to fear the Lord, and why does it lead to wisdom? And how it is different than normal fear?

Fear of the Lord is reverence of Him.

Reverence and awe at who he is. In Western Protestantism we are pretty good at talking about the Love of God. But sometimes we talk so much about how God is a friend and father, that we forget he is also our King.

And more than that He is truly awe-inspiring.

If you have ever been confronted with a massive mountain or powerful waterfall you are getting a glimpse of what it is like to confront the Lord.

Niagara Falls

It is beautiful, but powerful, fearful, and awe-inspiring. Now of course a mountain or river is just inanimate and cannot love, but you get the idea.

When we force ourselves to recognize the Lord for who he is, the mighty, powerful God he is, well, wisdom follows.

Wisdom because we know that a powerful mighty God is on our side.

Yes we may tremble when met with is awe-inspiring presence, but that fear, the fear of the Lord, helps to cure us from all other fear.

Mr Beaver

As the wise Mr Beaver in Narnia said when asked whether Aslan the Lion was safe (a representation of Jesus):  โ€œSafe?, who said anything about safe, course he isnโ€™t safe, but heโ€™s good. Heโ€™s the King.โ€

So what does all this talk about fear mean for your daily walk with Jesus? We will explore that tomorrow.

Until then,

Be Blessed
