One Shot. One Opportunity

Look, if you had one shot or one opportunity.

To sieze everything you ever wanted in one moment.

Would you capture it, or just let it slip?

Lose Yourself - Eminem

These are the opening lyrics to the soundtrack of a generation.

The words ring out in our years, telling us to grab the moment before us. That this is your time.

Well, I am going to half-agree with these lyrics today. Let me start by discuss some characters of the Bible.

Abraham was a shepherd

Abraham, was a shepherd.

Moses was also a shepherd.

Daniel worked in government.

Jesus spent his first 30 years as a carpenter.

Peter was a fisherman.

Paul was a teacher and tentmaker.

Why do I tell you all this? Its simple.

Most of our lives are mundane. The heroes of the Bible (including Jesus himself) spent the majority of their time doing mundane things.

Fixing chairs, tending sheep, writing government laws and contracts, doing business. Doing everyday life.

One shot. One opportunity

But, at specific moments in their life, they were called upon.

As one of the most famous verses of the Bible goes in Esther 4:14: β€œWho knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this?”

Esther was granted permission to speak to the King, taking her life in her hands to do so.

And indeed, at the time her people needed her, Esther took her life in her hands, and acted. At the right time, at the key moment, she stood up for her faith, for what she believed in.

Jesus responded to his call to ministry.

Peter and Paul to Jesus call.

Abraham responded to his test of faith with Isaac.

Moses at the burning bush.

That is the story of the heroes of the Bible. Mundane people, doing mundane things for the majority of their lives, until they had a moment of calling that defined them.

One shot. One opportunity.

Does the Mundane Matter?

There will come a moment when your faith will be tested.

I don’t know when, where or how. When you will be asked to act in a way that proves you really believe what you confess, just like the people in the Bible.

And for those you have been faithful in the everyday, it will be an easy test to pass.

But for those who said to themselves, β€œMy master is gone, let me do what I want,” it will not be so easy.

The history of the Bible shows that our lives are defined by a few key moments.

The moment of saying yes to God despite all the world against us.

And it is being faithful in the little, in the everyday, that allow us to respond appropriately when those moments come.

So I would encourage you today, in the routine of life. Stay faithful, stay true.

There will be a moment that asks a lot of you.

Make sure you are prepared.

Until next time,

Be Blessed,

Aaron
