Is change even possible?
Why is it so difficult to change?
Is it even possible? Or do we remain the person we are, flaws and all, from the cradle to the grave?
These are normal questions, especially at the start of a new year. Time presses on and shows no signs of slowing down. The older we get, the more aware we become of timeās passing and our imperfections in the face of it.
So, is change possible?
Obligatory David Bowie āChangesā reference.
New Year, new me?
Iāve got good news and bad news.
Yes, itās completely possible to change. In fact, weāre changing all the time. Every second, weāre subtly influenced by our surroundings, which shapes us into a particular kind of person.
Of course, other factors exist, such as our personality, stage of life, and so on, but the simple fact remainsā¦
ā¦no one gets through life unchanged.
Then thereās the bad news. Change isnāt inherently good.
At this time of the year, we often think about changing for the better. Unfortunately, changing for the worse is just as, if not more, possible.
So, really, the question is: how do we positively change?
The perils of positive change
How do we follow that New Year optimism of being our ābest selvesā? How do we take our āresolutionsā from pretty mental pictures to lived reality?
And why is it difficult?
We have thousands of years of human wisdom at our fingertips and, yet, still struggle toward positive change.
Why?
Wellā¦ change isnāt entirely under our control.
We arenāt completely helpless, we do have our fair share of control. We can choose where to live, who we spend time with, what we give attention to, and so onā¦
ā¦but thatās not enough.
The movie was better.
Fundamentally, change is spiritual. If we want to change for the better then we must understand the spirituality at play here. God knows we can't do it alone.
Luckily, thatās what weāll be covering this week!
So join us as Theophilus ushers in the New Year looking at what it means to change for the better.
Weāll continue that exploration tomorrow as we discuss the limits to one of mankindās most vital toolsā¦
Knowledge.
Weāll see you then,
For now, be blessed.
