Covenant loyalty and Hesed

God’s covenant with Abraham
Know that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps his gracious covenant loyalty (hesed) for a thousand generations with those who love him and keep his commands. (emphasis mine)
Earlier in chapter 7 of Deuteronomy, before verse 9, we read about why God chose to give the Israelites the promise land, and it can summed up in one sentence:
It was because God chose them, and He sticks to His Word.
It was not because Israel was a big nation, or had done anything special.
It was because God chose them and He is faithful.
One my favourite ways the Bible describes God is that he does “not cast a shifting shadow” (James 1:17), meaning that he does not change who he is.
He shows and keeps his covenant loyalty with his people, his hesed.
Gods covenant loyalty for you

God always acts consistent with who he is
So, what does this aspect of hesed reveal about God, and what does it mean for you?
I think this aspect of God is really difficulty for many of us to believe in. I know it is for me.
We see God “work” for other people in similar situations and think “why does God not act consistently?” Why does he heal some people and not others? Why does he let tragedy happen to some and not others?
It can feel like God is just not dependable. That he does not keep his covenant loyalty.
But that is not true.
God is who He is.
He will always act consistent with what He has said and who He is.
He is utterly and completely dependable to uphold His word for a thousand generations.
He keeps his hesed, his covenant loyalty.
And I pray that today you may not just know that, but believe it.
Until next time,
Be Blessed
Aaron,
