Do you wantā€¦ just a little bit more?

I am a sucker for self-development.

My YouTube shorts feed is filled with business and productivity ā€œgurus.ā€ I know, I know, most of it is self-help garbage, but I canā€™t help it.

At the start of the year, I am always filled with wide-eyed optimism of what could be achieved in the coming year. Visions flash before me, and dreams fill my sleeping hours. Goals that seemed impossible now taste of reality.

Of course, like most people, by the end of January, these goals often fall by the wayside. But after reflecting on what Jon wrote this week, I canā€™t help but ask myself, are the goals I have worth pursuing?

I heard a sermon the other week about two mountains. The first mountain is the mountain of success, Pleasure and achievement. This is the mountain most of us spend our life climbing. We think that once we reach the top, we will finally be satisfied.

And the truth is, most people never reach the top. But there are people who do, and what they discover always seems to be the same thing. When John D Rockefeller the billionaire American Oil Tycoon was asked how much money is enough, he replied with the now famous lineā€¦ ā€œ just a little bit more.ā€

John D Rockefeller

This is what the first mountain offers. A fleeting moment of glory, and then the knowing feeling of dissatisfaction. As the famous Rolling Stone song goes ā€œ I canā€™t get no satisfaction.ā€

But the second mountain. The second mountain only few people climb. And the second mountain has nothing to do with Worldly pleasures. The second mountain is about eternal things. It is one where Jesus Christ meets us at the bottom and says letā€™s climb together towards Love, Peace, Joy, and Holiness.

And at the top of the mountain, and every step along the way, we experience something that the first mountain never could. Contentment.

A simple understanding that the hole we have been seeking to fill with all our goals, has been filled with Jesus.

Donā€™t get me wrong. Pursing to better yourself this year is not a bad idea. I will be doing it right alongside you. But achieving your goals will never satisfy. By climbing the first mountain you will always be left wantingā€¦ just a little bit more.

So climb the second mountain.

Until Next Time,

Be Blessed,

Aaron
