📖 The centre of the universe
And other thoughts on being sick

I was a bit sick this week.

No, not the flu, but a bad enough cold that I was feeling the effects.
It's not fun. I am sure you know. If you are like most people in the west, you probably have a pretty busy schedule. Things that need to get done, meetings to attend. And sickness, well, it never comes at a convenient time does it – but let’s be honest is there ever a convenient time to be sick?
Sickness is not nice. I think we can all agree on that. But it does bring with it a lesson I think we can easily forget…
THE WORLD KEEPS SPINNING WITHOUT YOU!
We are not the centre of the universe?

hmmm, not so sure on this one…
When you get sick, all of a sudden those must-attend meetings are not so important. Those to-dos sitting on your list, really can wait for another day. The world goes on. And me, who thought the center of the universe would collapse if I failed to make progress on whatever project I was doing – well I learn that I am not the centre of the universe after all.
That I can afford a break. A pause.
When God was giving the laws to the Israelites he instructed them that every seventh year the land should have rest.
Six years you will plant seeds in your field. Six years you will take care of your vines and gather their fruit. But the seventh year will be a Year of Rest for the land, a Year of Rest to the Lord.
When the Israelites asked what they would eat in the 7th and 8th year. God said he would bless the 6th year to provide for them. Amazing isn’t it?
He is in control
God would provide for their rest.
A few weeks ago, Jon took us through the meaning of the Sabbath. Why we should do it, and how to go about it. He beautifully outlined how taking the Sabbath, is really an act of trust towards God. A trust that HE is in Control, and I am not. A day of reorientation. And I think taking a Sabbath is a great way to remind us of that.
But as I write this, I am also reminded that even though I hate being sick, perhaps this is also a chance to slow down, a chance for reorientation. A chance to thank God. To thank Him that He is in control. To thank Him that he provides the fruit in the 6th year.
To thank Him, that I can be sick, and the world keeps spinning, because I am not the one upholding it… HE IS!
And thank goodness for that!
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.
Til next week,
Be Blessed,
Aaron
