The most controversial thing about Jesus

Everybody loves Jesus!

I mean, come on, how can you hate the guy who popularized loving your enemies and “doing to others as you’d have them do to you”?

Christians, however, take this love of Jesus to a whole new level…

…and by a whole new level, I mean we literally worship Him as God.

A Fair Bit of Controversy

Jesus is rightly recognized as an exceptional teacher and a shining example of morality.

But God incarnate? That’s not as easy to accept.

The claim that Jesus is God resulted in the birth of Christianity, in countless conflicts throughout history, and, today, continues to be contentious as the very concept of God undergoes severe scrutiny.

The baptism of Jesus.

It makes you wonder… where did this claim come from? Why is it important in the first place? And is it even true?

The God Man

The origin of Jesus’ claim to Godhood varies depending on who you ask.

Certain non-Christian scholars would argue that the claim developed over hundreds of years.

Christian scholars, on the other hand, assert that Jesus Himself made this claim and, more than that, that the claim even predates Him (see John 1).

What both agree on, however, is that Jesus’ Resurrection was a major turning point in the story.

Because it was in the days after Jesus' death that multiple men and women claimed to have encountered their Teacher back from the grave.

Those encounters raised a question…

…is there more to Jesus than meets the eye?

Resurrection is a core theme when it comes to Jesus’ divinity.

As a follower of Jesus (aka, a Christian), I believe that He is, in fact, God. I’d even go as far as to say that this claim is the most important fact conceivable.

This week on Theophilus, we'll explore Jesus' long and controversial claim to fame.

We'll do that by examining two titles that the writers of Scripture (and Jesus Himself) used to refer to Him:

The Son of Man and the Son of God.

On the surface, they seem contradictory, but on closer inspection, we’ll see how they provide a strong case as to how this simple desert preacher is, indeed, the God of all the universe.

For now, be blessed.
